The Ligurian coast between Ventimiglia and Savona — the Riviera di Ponente — offers a sequence of beach towns, medieval hilltop villages, and seafood restaurants that are largely unknown to the Monaco-based international community. Alassio, Albenga, Finale Ligure, and Loano each have a distinct character: one is the Italian answer to Deauville, another an archaeological Roman colony, another a world capital of rock climbing. FFGR Monaco covers this entire coastal corridor with a half-day or full-day chauffeur programme, departing from the Principality and returning the same evening.
Alassio: The Italian Deauville
Alassio was the favoured summer resort of the English gentry in the early twentieth century — a character it has retained through the postwar decades. Its three-kilometre beach, the Muretto with its celebrity tile wall, and the pedestrian Budello shopping lane give it a resort infrastructure that is complete without being overwhelming. The drive from Monaco along the A10 takes approximately 50 minutes.
FFGR recommends Alassio for a morning beach programme combined with a late lunch at one of the seafront establishments — Gran Caffè Pasticceria Balzola for pastry, or Ristorante Sail Inn for seafood with a view of the Gallinara island. A return to Monaco by 17:00 is entirely comfortable from Alassio.
Albenga: The Roman Colony
Albenga preserves one of the best-maintained Roman colonial street plans in northern Italy — the cardo and decumanus still legible in the medieval urban fabric, anchored by the five-towered Palazzo Vecchio and a fifth-century baptistery with original octagonal structure. For clients with an interest in archaeology or urban history, Albenga is among the most rewarding half-day programmes on the Ligurian coast.
The surrounding Arroscia valley is the primary cultivation zone for Ligurian basil — the specific cultivar used in authentic pesto genovese. We can organise a brief visit to a producer in the valley above Albenga before or after the town visit, combined with a tasting lunch at a local agriturismo.
Finale Ligure: Sea Cliffs and Medieval Centre
Finale Ligure comprises the beach resort of Finalborgo Marina, the medieval borgo of Finalborgo, and the climbing district of Finale — making it the most multidimensional destination on the Ponente coast. Finalborgo is among the best-preserved medieval towns in Liguria, entirely car-free within its walls and containing a collection of Baroque churches and Genoese noble palaces.
For non-climbing clients, Finale Ligure rewards a programme combining a walk through Finalborgo, lunch at one of the osterie within the walls, and an afternoon at the Finale Marina beach before the return to Monaco. Total drive time from Monaco is approximately 1h10.
Planning a Ponente Coast Day
A full-day Ponente programme might combine Finale Ligure in the morning, Albenga at midday, and Alassio in the afternoon — moving steadily westward toward Monaco for a natural return. FFGR plans the sequence based on client priorities: if the emphasis is archaeological, Albenga is the anchor; if beach and dining, Alassio; if cultural and culinary, Finalborgo.
All Ponente coast programmes are available as half-day (09:00–14:00) or full-day (09:00–18:00) options. Vehicles wait at each stop or park at designated tourist areas — we advise on the most efficient arrangement at booking.
