Cinque Terre Day Trip from Monaco — Private Car & Train

May 2026 · 7 min read · FFGR Monaco Team

The Cinque Terre — five villages clinging to the cliffs of the Ligurian coast between Monterosso and Riomaggiore — represent one of the most visually arresting stretches of Italian coastline. From Monaco, they are reachable in under two hours by private car to La Spezia, with the final access to each village most comfortably completed by the regional train that threads the cliff tunnels between them. FFGR Monaco operates this as a structured full-day programme: car to La Spezia, curated village visits by train, private return to Monaco in the early evening.

Getting There: Monaco to La Spezia

The drive from Monaco to La Spezia follows the A10 and A12 autostrade through Genova, covering approximately 190 kilometres in under two hours under normal traffic. La Spezia serves as the practical base for all five villages — its train station connects to Riomaggiore, Manarola, Corniglia, Vernazza, and Monterosso in under 15 minutes per segment, with services every 15 to 30 minutes throughout the day.

FFGR drivers drop clients at La Spezia Centrale station, hold in the city, and receive the return call once the village programme is complete. For clients who prefer not to use the regional train, we can arrange water taxi access to Vernazza and Monterosso from La Spezia harbour — the maritime approach to the villages is among the most spectacular in the Mediterranean.

Village Selection and Priorities

Five villages in one day is ambitious unless the goal is photographs from the platforms. We recommend a focused programme: Vernazza for the best-preserved harbour and the climb to the castle tower, and Riomaggiore for the Via dell'Amore approach and the southern light in the afternoon. Manarola is the most photographed village and rewards an early visit before the mid-morning crowds arrive.

Corniglia, set on a headland rather than at sea level, requires a climb of approximately 300 steps from the station platform. It is the least visited of the five and offers the most unmediated experience of the vernacular Ligurian village. Monterosso, the largest, has a proper beach — suitable for clients who want a full lunch and a swim rather than concentrated cultural exploration.

Hiking the Coast Path

The Sentiero Azzurro — the coastal path connecting all five villages — offers one of Italy's most celebrated walking experiences, though the full route of approximately 12 kilometres is only recommended for clients with appropriate footwear and a tolerance for steep uneven terrain. The segment from Riomaggiore to Manarola has been partially restored after cliff damage and should be confirmed open before planning.

FFGR carries a current trail status report on all Cinque Terre programmes and advises clients before departure whether the coastal path between their chosen villages is passable. We carry hiking shoes for clients who did not anticipate walking — a small logistics detail that has resolved more than one itinerary.

Return Timing and Evening Options

A standard Cinque Terre programme departs Monaco at 07:30, reaches La Spezia by 09:30, allows five to six hours in the villages, and returns to Monaco by 18:30. For clients who want a seafood dinner in La Spezia before returning — the city's port quarter has some of the best raw seafood in Liguria — we extend the programme to a 20:30 return.

Overnight options in the Cinque Terre itself are limited for UHNW standards. The best nearby base is the Hotel Porto Roca in Monterosso, perched above the sea with private access. We can coordinate luggage transfer and a next-day return to Monaco if requested.
