The Festival International du Cirque de Monte-Carlo is the most important circus competition in the world and takes place each January under the permanent big top at Fontvieille, the industrial quarter of Monaco on the western edge of the Principality. The festival was founded by Prince Rainier III in 1974 and is currently chaired by Princess Stephanie. For principals attending with children or grandchildren, the festival offers one of the most exceptional family entertainment experiences in Europe, and the private chauffeur service during festival week requires familiarity with the Fontvieille access routes.
The Fontvieille Chapiteau — Location and Access
The festival's permanent big top is located in the Fontvieille quarter, on the western side of Monaco adjacent to the port extension. The access from the main Monaco road network is via the Avenue de Fontvieille and the Tunnel du Portier, a route that bypasses the Casino and the palace quarter entirely. For principals arriving from the east — Nice Airport, Italy, or the Cote d'Azur hotels — the most direct approach uses the Basse Corniche into Fontvieille from the French side.
During festival week, the Fontvieille area accommodates the artists' accommodation, the animal care area, and the technical infrastructure as well as the chapiteau itself. Parking is managed by the festival organisation; our driver drops the principal at the VIP entrance on the north side of the chapiteau and relocates to the authorised waiting area on Avenue de la Quarantaine for the duration of the performance.
VIP Seating and Princess Stephanie's Presence
The festival's VIP section — the central block of the lower tier, closest to the ring — is arranged through the Palace protocol office and the festival's patron programme. For principals who have an established relationship with the Grimaldi family or who are guests of a corporate sponsor, access to the VIP block includes a pre-show reception and the possibility of attendance at the prize ceremony on the final evening.
Princess Stephanie attends every performance of the festival. Her presence creates a specific atmosphere in the chapiteau and establishes the event as a cultural occasion that transcends its entertainment category. For principals unfamiliar with the festival, we advise attending the final weekend when the competition has identified its leading acts and the prize ceremony follows the gala performance.
The Competition Format — Golden Clowns and Silver Clowns
The Festival International du Cirque awards the Golden Clown — the highest honour in circus arts — and the Silver Clown across disciplines including aerialism, juggling, clown performance, animal acts, and equilibrism. The competition format runs across multiple performances over the festival's two-week duration, with each act performing once for the judging panel.
For clients wishing to attend more than one performance, we recommend the gala preview on the opening Saturday and the prize-giving final on the closing Saturday. The prize-giving final includes the full competition programme and the award ceremony, lasting approximately three and a half hours. We advise scheduling dinner before the performance rather than after.
Family Logistics — Children's Programme and Animal Backstage
The festival operates a children's programme on certain afternoons that includes backstage access to the animal care area and the chance to meet performers between shows. For principals attending with children under twelve, this programme is one of the most exceptional experiences the festival offers. We coordinate the arrival timing for afternoon performances to allow the backstage visit before the show begins.
The animal area at Fontvieille houses the tigers, elephants, horses, and exotic species that compete in the animal acts category. For children with a strong interest in the animal acts, the backstage visit focuses on the animal care team and the training environment. Access requires specific advance arrangement through the festival's hospitality programme.
January Monaco — Dining and Hotel Recommendations
January is Monaco's quietest month and the most composed time to visit the Principality. The restaurants are less crowded, the hotels are available on short notice, and the social atmosphere has the understated quality that Monaco residents prefer to the high season. For principals attending the circus festival in January, the combination of the chapiteau, the Louis XV for dinner, and a morning walk on the port makes for one of the most authentically Monegasque programmes of the year.
The Hotel de Paris offers its lowest availability constraints in January. For clients who have previously been unable to secure the Duplex Suite or the Grace Kelly Suite in the high season, January is the most accessible booking window. We coordinate the hotel reservation as part of the festival programme.
