Monaco to Portofino by Private Chauffeur — The Ligurian Coastal Route

May 2026 · 5 min read · FFGR Monaco Ground Team

Portofino is Monaco's closest Italian counterpart in terms of concentrated luxury and restricted access — a village of 400 permanent residents whose harbour front accommodates some of the most valuable yachts in the Mediterranean. The drive from Monaco to Portofino covers approximately 155 kilometres through the Italian Riviera, taking two hours and ten minutes in normal conditions. FFGR Monaco operates this route as a standard Italian cross-border service, with vehicles certified for Italian territory and drivers experienced on the Ligurian coast.

The Route: Via the Italian Riviera

Departing Monaco, the A8/A10 autostrada crosses the Italian border at Ventimiglia and follows the Ligurian coast through San Remo, Albenga, and Savona before branching southwest on the A26 toward Rapallo and the Portofino promontory. Alternatively, the more scenic SS1 Via Aurelia follows the coast closely through Imperia and Alassio — adding approximately 40 minutes but providing a dramatically different landscape from the motorway.

FFGR Monaco advises the autostrada for time-sensitive arrivals and the Via Aurelia for clients who treat the journey itself as part of the Riviera experience. Both routes arrive at Santa Margherita Ligure, from which a dedicated vehicle and driver complete the final 5-kilometre access to Portofino's restricted zone.

Portofino's Access Constraints

Portofino village imposes vehicle access restrictions that make the final approach more complex than the journey itself. Private vehicles may not enter the Piazza Martiri dell'Olivetta or the harbour front during the peak visitor window (April–October, typically 10h00–18h00). FFGR Monaco's Portofino service includes a local area liaison who manages the parking and access protocol, ensuring our client arrives at the harbour front with minimum procedural delay.

For clients with yacht berths in Portofino harbour, FFGR coordinates the vehicle-to-tender transition with the yacht team, so the Monaco departure timing aligns precisely with the tender's availability at the stone jetty.
