Portofino & Rapallo Day Trip by Chauffeur from Monaco

May 2026 · 7 min read · FFGR Monaco Team

Portofino requires no introduction to anyone who has ever seen its harbour photograph — the pastel facades, the church of San Giorgio above the promontory, the superyachts at anchor in the crystalline bay. What is less understood is how easily it is reached from Monaco with a private car: one hour and fifteen minutes along the A10 and A26, door to Castello Brown, with no train connections and no shared itinerary. FFGR Monaco operates this route as one of its most requested Italian Riviera day programmes, often combining Portofino with a lunch stop in Rapallo.

The Route: A10 to Portofino

The most efficient routing from Monaco follows the A10 autostrada to Genova Ovest, then the A26 south toward Chiavari before exiting at Rapallo and following the coastal SP227 into Portofino village. Total drive time under standard conditions is 1h15 to 1h30. The SP227 between Santa Margherita Ligure and Portofino is single-lane in sections and subject to seasonal access restrictions — our drivers know the current permitted vehicle categories and arrange parking at Santa Margherita when Portofino's own capacity is closed.

For clients who prefer to approach Portofino by water, we coordinate the transfer to Santa Margherita Ligure harbour and arrange a private water taxi for the final 20-minute approach. The combination — car to Santa Margherita, boat to Portofino, car return — is one of our most requested formats for this destination.

Castello Brown and the Village

Castello Brown sits above the harbour on the eastern promontory, offering the defining panoramic view of Portofino's bay. The climb from the harbour square takes approximately 10 minutes on foot; we carry a brief site guide for clients who wish context before they arrive. The village itself is compact — the harbour piazzetta, the church, a handful of high-quality restaurants and boutiques — and rewards slow exploration.

The best-known restaurants in Portofino — including Ristorante Puny at the piazza level and Il Pitosforo above the harbour — operate without formal reservations during mid-season but are best approached with a local contact. FFGR maintains a relationship with both establishments and can coordinate a confirmed table when bookings are requested at least 48 hours before the excursion date.

Rapallo: A Complete Complement

Rapallo, 10 minutes north of Portofino along the same coast road, offers the Belle Époque resort character of the Tigullio Gulf: a long seafront promenade, the medieval castle on its rock above the bay, and a café culture entirely distinct from Portofino's concentrated luxury. For a full day programme, we typically arrange a morning in Portofino and lunch in Rapallo before the early afternoon return to Monaco.

The Hotel Splendido in Portofino and the Hotel Excelsior Palace in Rapallo are both available for clients who prefer to convert the day excursion into an overnight. FFGR coordinates luggage forwarding and the return transfer on the following day if requested.

Programme and Timings

A standard Portofino–Rapallo day programme departs Monaco between 08:00 and 09:00, reaches Portofino by 10:15, allows three to four hours in the village and at Castello Brown, continues to Rapallo for a 13:30 lunch, and returns to Monaco by 17:00 to 17:30. The programme can be extended by up to two hours without affecting a comfortable return.

Advance booking of 48 hours is recommended. For same-day requests, contact us before 07:30. Restaurant reservations in Portofino require their own lead time and should be coordinated with us at booking.
