Villa Ephrussi de Rothschild — Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat, Foundation & Private Garden Tours

May 2026 · 7 min read · FFGR Monaco Team

The Villa Ephrussi de Rothschild at Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat is one of the most extraordinary private residences ever built on the French Riviera — a pink Belle Époque palace constructed between 1905 and 1912 by Béatrice de Rothschild and surrounded by nine themed gardens overlooking both the Bay of Villefranche and the Bay of Beaulieu. Today a museum and foundation open to the public, it houses one of the most important private collections of French decorative arts from the 18th century, including Sèvres porcelain, Flemish tapestries and furniture from the royal palaces of France. Located twenty minutes from Monaco, it is among the most culturally significant excursion destinations on the Riviera. FFGR Monaco provides discreet, knowledgeable chauffeur service for visits to this exceptional site.

The Cap Ferrat Setting

Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat is one of the most exclusive communes in France — a peninsula extending south from Villefranche-sur-Mer whose private real estate encompasses some of the Mediterranean's most valuable properties. The Villa Ephrussi sits on the peninsula's narrowest point, at an elevation that gives it simultaneous views over both bays flanking Cap Ferrat. The approach by road from Monaco follows either the Basse Corniche through Villefranche or the upper route via Èze-Bord-de-Mer, both approximately twenty minutes.

FFGR Monaco's drivers navigate the Cap Ferrat peninsula's narrow residential roads with the precision that these private environs demand. The parking area at the Villa Ephrussi is limited, and during peak visiting periods — summer weekends, the school holidays of April and October — arrival before 10:00 or after 15:00 ensures an unhurried visit without congestion at the entrance.

The Foundation's Collection

The Villa Ephrussi de Rothschild houses Béatrice de Rothschild's personal collection across fourteen furnished rooms whose contents she specified be kept in situ after her death. The collection includes more than 5,000 objects: Sèvres and Vincennes porcelain, furniture attributed to the great ébénistes of the ancien régime, paintings by Fragonard, Renoir and Boucher, Flemish and Beauvais tapestries, and an extraordinary collection of Meissen porcelain birds.

FFGR Monaco can arrange private visits to the Villa Ephrussi outside normal public visiting hours, in coordination with the Foundation's curatorial team. These private visits allow guests to experience the collection's rooms without other visitors and with the optional presence of a specialist guide who can contextualise the collection within the broader history of French decorative arts and the Rothschild family's collecting history.

The Nine Gardens

The nine gardens surrounding the villa — French formal, Florentine, Spanish, exotic, Japanese, Provençal, lapidary, Sèvres and rose — were designed by Béatrice de Rothschild to create a complete landscape experience that would complement the interior collection. The French formal garden, with its central dancing waters fountain, faces the Bay of Villefranche and is the most photographed garden in the south of France outside Versailles.

For garden enthusiasts among our clients, FFGR Monaco suggests visiting the gardens in the morning light when the Florentine and French formal gardens are at their most photogenic. The garden café, positioned in the Provençal garden, serves a light lunch that can be incorporated into the visit programme — a detail our drivers note in the briefing so the timing allows for an unhurried meal without compromising the afternoon schedule.

Combining Cap Ferrat & Villa Ephrussi

The Villa Ephrussi visit combines naturally with a broader exploration of Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat itself — the Grand-Hôtel du Cap-Ferrat, the public gardens of the Villa des Cèdres, the Cap Ferrat walking trail and the village's excellent restaurant La Table du Cap. FFGR Monaco designs half-day and full-day Cap Ferrat programmes that incorporate the Villa Ephrussi as the cultural anchor alongside a beach club lunch and an afternoon drive around the peninsula.

For guests staying at the Grand-Hôtel du Cap-Ferrat or in private villas on the peninsula, we provide on-call Monaco-to-Cap-Ferrat transfers throughout their stay. Our knowledge of the peninsula's private road network and the preferred entrances used by residents rather than visitors allows us to navigate the Cape efficiently even during the high season when tourist traffic slows the main road.

Return Journey Options

The return from Villa Ephrussi to Monaco offers several variations that transform the transfer into a landscape experience. The Basse Corniche route through Beaulieu-sur-Mer, Èze-Bord-de-Mer and Cap d'Ail is the classic coastal sequence — a succession of small ports, art deco hotels and sea views that constitutes one of the finest twenty-minute drives in Europe. FFGR Monaco's drivers are encouraged to offer guests a brief stop at the Beaulieu-sur-Mer esplanade or the viewpoint above Cap d'Ail if the schedule permits.

For guests combining the Villa Ephrussi with dinner at Château Eza, we plan the return from Cap Ferrat via the Moyenne Corniche — ascending from Beaulieu to the village level and arriving at the Parking d'Èze for the dinner reservation with time to spare. The two destinations together — the most beautiful garden on the Riviera in the afternoon and a Michelin dinner with the finest view at night — represent one of the most complete cultural day programmes we offer.
